We are pleased to introduce our Scholarship recipients for the 2017-2018 SSWLHC Annual Scholarship. All applicants for this scholarship are WA State residents that are completing their final year in their respective MSW programs. Recipients receive a $2,500 scholarship and the opportunity to participate on the SSWLCH Board. As always, we were in awe of the talent that applied for our annual scholarship. The recipients this year are: Sorya Pao and Gailon Wixson. We are excited to have these stellar scholars participate on the board this year.
My name is Sorya Pao and I am in the advanced standing MSW program at the University of Washington Tacoma campus. I am currently completing my advanced practicum at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center at the Gastroenterology Clinic. Previously, I attended the University of Washington Tacoma for my Bachelor’s in Social Welfare. I have worked with children and families and spent time working with children in schools. I am a part of a research team conducting a study to explore how commuter campuses can better provide programming related to intimate partner violence and sexual assault. In my free time, I enjoy doing yoga, reading, and spending time with my husband and 1 year-old puppy, Stella.
Gailon is in her second year of the MSW day program at the University of Washington. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in social work at Pacific Lutheran University and then began working as a social worker at Mother Joseph Care Center in Olympia. Since moving to Seattle, Gailon has continued her passion for social work in health care through an internship at Swedish Cancer Institute. In the fall she will be joining the Carol LeMare program at UW while interning at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. After graduation from UW, Gailon hopes to become an oncology social worker in the Seattle area. She is very excited to join the SSWLHC chapter in Seattle.
